George Strait took home the CMA’s Willie Nelson Lifetime Achievement Award and was honored with an unforgettable tribute performance.
Miranda Lambert, Chris Stapleton, Lainey Wilson, Jamey Johnson, and Parker McCollum took the stage for a career-spanning tribute to the King of Country, who decided to join in on the fun!
Lainey kicked off the tribute with a rendition of “Amarillo by Morning,” and Johnson came next performing “Give It Away.”
Texas natives Miranda Lambert and Parker McCollum stepped onstage, singing “Troubadour.” Finally, the curtain opened up on George Strait himself, who stood beside Stapleton as the pair performed their duet, “Honky Tonk Hall of Fame.”
“Cheers, brother,” Strait said at the conclusion of the song. After the tribute, Stapleton presented Strait with his trophy.
“First of all, I want to thank my lord and savior, Jesus Christ,” Strait began after receiving a standing ovation from the crowd.
“I want to thank the CMAs for adding my name to the incredible artists on the small list of recipients carrying the name of the icon Willie Nelson.”
In his speech, Strait went on to thank his family.
So great to have you all here," he said. “But especially Norma, who’s supported me for just shy of 53 years in December. It’s been an amazing 53 years, too.”
